Travel Companies
update for 2004

I am sorry that this window currently features UK companies. I would appreciate hearing from readers in other countries with information about how they get to Plakias.

As it is so difficult to keep details up to date here, please check into the forums to get up to date information, and comments from other visitors.

Comments upon the quality and service provided by holiday companies is welcome, and is provided to help in making choices. The forums are the best place - but mail me if you wish.

When I first went to Plakias there were 5 UK companies offering holidays in the resort. But the travel industry seems to be very volatile. As a result of big business - mergers and rationalisations - there was only one major company with a presence in Plakias - First Choice. I feel they took advantage of this in their pricing structure.
Thankfully, Olympic Holidays moved into the resort in 2000, providing, in my opinion, a more efficient and personal service. Their charges are very competitive too - and although they do not offer as wide a range of airports/flights as
First Choice, they are well worth checking out. I used Olympic for both my Plakias holidays in 2000, and was well impressed. I also used them twice in 2001, and apart from inaccurate descriptions of transfer times, was happy.
We used Olympic Holidays again in 2002, returning to Dora for the fifth time. They were cheaper than
First Choice, but I do feel the edge is going off their service. I guess we were spoilt by having great reps in the past like Kelly and Jacinta - Sarah who was there in 2003 was, I felt, distinctly unimpressive!

We moved to First Choice in 2004, and were pleased with a much better service - and excellent rep.

For 2004:
First edition brochures from
First Choice and Olympic Holidays are now available. They are at the Travel Agents, and can also be ordered from the websites. In both cases, read the small print - options for transfers, single occupancy etc. can make quite a difference to the total price in both cases. At this stage, neither company seems to have added new accommodations for this year.

As I get additional information, I will add it in, so check back here or on the massage board, where I will make a posting when I do any changes.

We could stiill use some information on:

Argo. I have no personal experience of the company, but I have spoken to several people who used them, and the feeling is that their service is OK, but expensive. However, they have some rooms in the village this year - and comments on their service for Plakias customers have not been favourable.

Smart Holidays. No recent information - can you help?

Simply Crete Pulled out of Plakias after the 2002 season - as far as I know!

For 2005:
I hear that there might be a new company in Plakias for 2005 - details as we discover them in the forums.

Personal Gripe!
It is not easy to get brochures in the high street - unless you want to go with the large operators.

The travel industry being what it is, the larger travel agents seems to be affiliated to certain of the travel companies, and understandably seem to push their products. If you want a choice, or to use the smaller companies, you have to search around, or find an independent agent. Thank goodness for the web!
