The Plakias Train

This is the Plakias 'Train', that is often seen around the towns and villages in the Plakias area. I get many mails to the site, often from people who have spent a very happy holiday there - and I am surprised at how often the train gets a mention as part of their memories.

I will admit that I have never traveled on it - but have taken advantage of a similar vehicle when I was on holiday in Tunisia - and had a fun ride. Wherever it goes, it seems to attract attention - it's fun to see it pass by - but not so enjoyable if you are stuck behind it in one of the long queues of traffic it causes.
Love it or loath it, it does provide a cheap and entertaining way of seeing a lot of the sites in the area.

I don't have a 2001 timetable available yet, but did pick up a 2000 timetable last year, which will give an idea.

You can get the train to Damnoni every morning, and back in the evening. Times vary daily, so be careful to check. Last year, this cost 500 drax.
Every evening, the train does trips between Damnoni and Plakias - but also you can take a return trip to Myrthios Village. This a lovely evening trip, as there are interesting shops to browse, and several tavernas to choose from (my favourite is Platia, where you will find a perfect welcome, excellent food and a wonderful position to watch the sun go down).

Daytime Excursions:
A varied programme of excursions is available, which changes weekly. There is the opportunity to visit several mountain villages - and get a feel for 'Old Crete'. The gorges around the area can be quite spectacular - Kourtaliotis and Kotsifou feature. You could visit Spili, the busy market town with a Venetian feel, and opportunities to buy local olive oil and honey. Preveli monastry is also well worth a vist - a place I found fascinating.

If you are interested in taking a trip, look for the sign in the car park in the centre of town, which usually has a timetable available for you to collect. The train leaves from here for all the trips.

(26 June '04) When we were there in May, the train was not running, having been damaged by heavy snow! I hear it will be back some time this season - any reports?
